Hey everyone. So I'm moving from colorado to seattle and towing a 5x8 uhaul with my 93 4runner. I figured it could handle it but I just read a few posts about how awful uhaul trailors can be (i.e. bad breaks, suspension) My truck is a 5 speed, has brand new breaks all around and new rotors up front, OME springs in back. Think i'll be alright? anyone else have bad experiences or anything I should know about before towing the uhaul?

Wow, missing a lot of info to get any responses. Tire size, gears, engine???
I have a 1990 v6 pickup with a 5 speed and I don't know exactly what the gears are but I suspect they are nothing special. Point is that I tow a lund boat with engine and gear and I hate towing it more than 10 miles or so.
I would suggest putting the wear on a U-Haul truck w/box and put your runner on a trailer. Thats just me though...

Look us NW Toyota guys up if you need any help. https://www.yotatech.com/group.php?groupid=3
Its a good thing it's a 5 speed behind that 3.0...
I'm not a BIG fan of uhaul, I like Penske. Just check the trailer out well before you use it.

Didn't know penske did a trailor rental thing. I'll look into it.

holy flying monkey poo.
yeah man drop a post in the bumper thread if you want! We try and do stuff once a month. I'm not gonna lie though, wheelin here is NOT the same wheelin like in CO. lol! Make sure your mud flaps are good and your wheels don't stick out to far!
Anywho, As long as you drive the limit of the trailer and take your time you'll be fine. I towed a tow dolly with a nissan on it 1200+ miles outta NM to almost Oregon in Northern Cali. No issues.

with the truck in my sig I towed that exact same uhaul trailer you have in the pic you posted. Trailer brakes worked wonderfully and there was minimal sway.

That's AWD for you... (that is a Landcruiser, right?) And pulling with one, just for that very reason should be against the law!

I could pull yer leg all day about... "Well, if it was 1,100 miles... but 1,200, I just don't know"
Bottom line. Go slow, enjoy the scenery... Just act like you got some sense and you'll be fine.
Towing in North America is WAY overrated... You should see the things they strap-on or bolt-on to these trucks in other counties and pull.
Diehard Dodge, Ferd and Chevy Diesel guys just want to pull the biggest load they can, as fast as they can b/c that's how they measure their dicks between one another...
You got anything to prove?
...that's what I thought. Have a nice day.

alot of problems that will occur can be stopped by you, check out the tire pressure in all the tires of your truck and trailer before you leave, be sure to load the trailer weight correctly and do 55 its for a reason. doin those simple things will make a world of difference.hope all goes good

just be careful. My parents came up on a taco that had just finished rolling over, cuz a Uhaul trailer had gotten hit with wind, threw the truck around, and rolled it over. I mean, they practically watched the end of the roll-over.... dude was still not feelin any pain yet when they pulled up. As far as what they do in other countries..... No Joke, I have seen a Hilux pickup bed loaded, with stuff on top, the sides, and hood, as well as probably 10 people inside it, cruising down the road at about 65 mph... no rules in Africa.

I just towed my jet ski about 250 miles this weekend behind my 4Runner...it did fine...just make sure ya get a running start at the hills!
What part of seattle you coming to?
I dig penske as well...I've rented their 24' trucks before at usually ½ the price of uhaul...

so I ended up getting the smaller 4x4x8 trailor uhaul had. the thing is only 850 lbs so it doesn't feel like much towing it. I was suprised to see it had no suspention tho... no leaf springs anyway. think it has some sort of tourque suspention. I'm not to worried about towing it, i tow a lot of boats for work and i'm pretty sensible about it. I just herd some shocking stories about uhual but I checked out the trailor i rented from them and it looks almost brand new.
Irish death- moving to the queen ann area. need to get to know some of you NW guys to get to know some of the trails you guys have up there

the Trailor doesn't have brakes.
So the mud flap thing.... i've herd the cops like to get on you about this in WA, think I could get away without having them considering I have New Hampshire plates? couldn't I just play dumb and say I'm from NH and didn't know any better?
need some ideas for flaps... The stock ones have been gone for a long time. My truck had some bad cancer on the sheet metal behind where the bumper wraps around, sooo I ended up chopping it off and boxing off that area with fresh sheet metal. so no real good place to attach flaps in the back. I'll have to search around YT to find what other people have done.
Hopefully I can just get away without for a while.

You can play dumb a couple times...I don't have mud flap yet and I will play the same dumb card when I get pulled over for it fist unless I actually find some...not too worried till i get new tires...snap thats today/tomorrow

You should be fine as far as capacity for towing. I helped my sister pull a 4x4x6 uhaul from Portland Oregon to El Paso Tx with her honda civic. Just check your tires and lights mind the wind and when in doubt slow down early.
