No power after an injection pump swap on a 1985/6 diesel 2.4 pickup

Hi,
had a few questions regarding the injection pump swap i did. (truck is a 1986 diesel 2wd pickup, 2.4 L)
the problem: after a rough start a smooth idle is reached. however, when the throttle is engaged towards the peak the engine starts to cough and does not gain power.

what i did: last year I found antifreeze in my oil. I drove half way across the continent like that, opened it up at home and found big cracks between every cylinder. I found another truck with the same 2.4 l diesel non-turboed engine and swapped them. the original truck was 1986. the new engine was a 1985. That new engines injection pump began to leak at the actuating arm. i drove like that for a year till i had time to work on it. I took my old injection pump from the 86, put it in the 85. now, it won't produce any power, but will idle fine.

question: are the 1986 injection pumps the same as the 1985 pumps for the 2.4 L non turboed diesels? assuming my timing was correct (i've already opened it up again to double check) what else could the problem be? do i have to make any adjustments on the pump itself?
