HELP PLEASE! 86 yota w/ 94 trans

Ok first off I'm new to toyotas just bought an 86 the guy Jerry rigged a lot it has a 94 transmission in it 1) is this even a appropriate match obviously they will bolt up but the shifter is really sloppy feeling trying to find the gears is this due to the year difference or the bushing and shifter seat I've heard of so much about? I've undone the plate in the floor board with six screws and the four on the Lil plate holding the shifter in the tranny but can't get the shifter out of the plate it feels spring Locked and I have no idea were the bushing is located I found the little seat on the shifter ball it's in good shape. The guy I bought it from said to just put two o-rings to tighten it up but not were to put them. Sorry so long but please help
