fuel filter orientation?

Ive owned my truck for 6 yrs and finally changed the fuel filter today. I managed to disconnect the fuel lines but could get the mounting bolts of the fuel filter so i just left it there and ziptied my new one to my wheel well. Does the filter have to be oriented any certain way?? the only thing i did was make sure the lines weren't kinked. I have it straight up and down with the output on top and the input on bottom. My engine seems to run ok so far.

I think one of the sides of the filter has a tiny leak. You just tighten the bolts down right? they dont have to be turned a certain way right?
