Change out Main Seal on 91 3.0
Hello Yota Techs,I changed my oil yesterday and noticed some leakage around the main seal,on my 91 4Runner SR5 3.0 it has 130k on the stock motor.How difficult of a job is this to change out?If someone has pics to go with this procedure it would be very helpful.My rig loses only a 1/4 of a ouart between oil changes every 3000 miles.Also what would a mechanic charge to replace the main seal,and oil pan gasket? Sounds like your oil consumption is minimal. I would'nt do anything unless the leak gets much worse.
This can be addressed at a later time when you have to go into the front of the engine for timing belt maintainance, or water pump replacement, ect.
Edit: Oh, maybe you meant the rear main seal.
That is even more intensive work, because the tranny must be dropped for repair.
Same advice: live with it until the leak becomes excessive, or until you have to go into those components for other maintainance or repairs.

Auto or Manaul, front or rear seal?
If it's your rear main seal it's not as bad a job as people make it out to be. I'm no mechanic and my freeze plug and rear main went, went to harbor freight and got a torque wrench and a transmission jack, bought a clutch alignment tool for 3 bucks on Amazon, seals/parts, watched a few videos and did it myself.
Personally I think the front main is more confusing than the rear. Timing stuff makes my head spin.
The most I ever did before that was a water pump, starter, and some basic repairs..
Have confidence, set some time side and you can do it yourself. If you need a link to the FSM for the 3.0 4runner I can give that to you, just PM me. I can also direct you to the useful videos I watched in order to drop my transmission, remove the clutch and do the rear main.
From what i've read oil pans generally look like they are leaking and its mostly gravity playing tricks on you, leaks coming from above.
