Post ac/dc?--distributor current

Howdy folks, is the current from the dist. sending unit to the coil/ignitor ac current or dc? Trying to diagnose mystery problem in the ignition circuit. Thanks

DC, definitely DC. The coil is basically just a transformer that steps up the voltage.

The only AC in your truck's electrical system is generated by the alternator (alternating current, alternator, hmmmm), though it is converted to DC by the rectifier diode bridge, after that point everything is DC.

Thanks. Would you happen to know what the voltage is supposed to be that is sent from pickup to ignitor? I'm trying to avoid buying an ignitor if I don't need one. I have 22R with a carb. '87
