Just picked up a 79 short bed with a rebuilt 20r. The original gas tank is rusted out an having trouble finding one to fit the stock brackets. I know the fuel pump is in the tank. Could I just put a small tank in the bed and an in line fuel pump? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

Fuel pump is not in tank stock. Should have a mechanical fuel pump attached to head on passenger side up front. Did they do an aftermarket one?
I could of swore someone on here...maybe Slacker...had a source for a 1st gen gas tank. a new one. PM him and see.
Have a picture of the truck? We wanna see it. Underhood shot would be good too.

i know i changed the popoff valve a million times it seems.
to answer your question yes, but why not fix it right and be able to use your bed for truck duties?

HighLux. I believe 79 was the year that changed from electrical to mechanical but this pump is def in tank. I will post pics shortly
Donomite. I would love to leave the bed open but can't seem to find a replacement tank for the 79. It's just an extra truck at the hunting camp so don't really want to get into expensive mods for an aftermarket fuel tank. Just curious if anyone knew if putting a small tank in bed with in line fuel pump was an option. Thanks guys
