3rd members

I have a 87 toyota pickup with the 22re and i need a new 3rd member with the 4.10 gear, what other years are the same as mine ? are they the same in 4runners ? dose it matter if the donor truck had a 6cyl ? and whats a fair price for a used one ? is there anything to watch out for when buying a used one ? thanks

This is a good source for that stuff

But you really should try a search before posting a simple question.
Just sayin ,

Well you can buy a new one with any gear ratio you want and an arb locker installed in it for about $1200. So a stock 4.11 3rd with god nows how many miles on it shouldnt be more then a few hundred clams.

As far as bad bearings go its pretty uncommon. But id check the 3rd by hand to feel for roughness when it spins or anything obvious, other then that theres not much you can do.

And obviously visually inspect the gears.

  1. Same 3rd member w/ same gear ratio: 86-95 4cyl. exc. turbo, same gear ratio different 3rd member: 83-85(4 cyl.). Either type of 4 cyl. 3rd member will work, the difference is in the ring and pinion gears and the inner pinion bearings(SPH vs. LPH).
  2. Yes, it does matter. If the donor truck had a V6 or a Turbo 4 cyl., then it has a stronger 4-pinion differential. No, it doesn't matter. Because you can still use it in your 4cyl. axle housing.
  3. I wouldn't want to pay more than $150-200 for a really nice used 3rd member. I've paid less than that before for a pretty decent one.
  4. The only thing you might want to watch out for, aside from the obvious, would be the pinion flange bolt hole pattern. That way you don't have to swap the flanges so the driveshaft will bolt up. But, like I said, if you needed to you could just swap the pinion flanges.
