High Idle
I have a 2006 Tacoma prerunner. It sounds like it is idled high to me. It jumps to around 1200-1300 then drops to around 950. I brought it to the toyota place near me and they siad it had carbon build up and needed spark plug changes. They did this work and nothing changed. Can someone tell me if this is normal on the tacomas and what is the normal range for RPM's. I appriciate any help. Thanks

mine is doing the same thing and from what I was told there suppose to idle between 800-900 RPM but when its cold its normal to idle about 1200-1300 RPM but you can also check the plaque on the underside of your hood it tells you... I was told the same thing about my plugs/wires so Im gonna try it cuz mine are original from dealer and have over 223,000 miles on them

your idle will definately be high when cold. When the engine is cold the 02 sensor does not function, the catalyst is cold and the engine/ecm is not in closed loop. The purpose of the high idle when cold is to get the engine up to operating temp as quickly as possible. The engine will run more efficiently when warm and the emmisions will be dramatically reduced by rapidly heating the catalyst and o2 sensor. It should idle around 750 and 800 rpm's when hot.
