GX-470 folks...what year did VVTi start ??

I am familar with the 4runner and when it switched to VVTi (I had an 03 V8 runner and had my bubble burst the first time I drove a VVti)

Is there a model year/date cut off for VVTi in the GX-470 as I am now in the market for a used one.

Regards

David

first time hearing a toyota owner concerns w/ VVT-i.

thats the 2UZ-FE w/ VVT-i on 04+ GX470 and 05+ 4runner.

i dont think the vvt-i on those motors are there for performance, its there for lower emission.

I may have worded my post badly. The evident lack of low end torque on my non VVTi V8 was painfully evident after driving them back to back.

Emmisions of not, the peak power increases by 40 hp and the torque curve is flattened and peak torque is lower which is significant in terms of driveability.

its totally a performance upgrade, it improves torque thru out the rpm band, lower emission is just a side benefit, wait to they start offering full vvt-i. you'll get the benefit on the exhaust side as well. vvt-i-L. available on most celica gts and matrixs xrs as well as a few lexus models is & gs models.

If im not mistaken its was 2000 they started using that cam setup on toyota's, lexus im not so sure.

peace

IIRC, the VVT-i also improved EPA ratings slightly. Great choice for a used SUV. New and loaded they went for over $70K. A clean, low mileage '04 lease turn-in will go for half that. Also, take the VIN to a Lexus dealer and they'll give you the service and warranty history if the owner used a Lexus dealer.

The GX470 received the VVT-i treatment in 2005 at the same time as the T4R.
