wire tach to an SR 5 cluster. 85' runner??

So I bought an 84' SR 5 cluster to switch with my 85 dlx cluster with no tach. I understand how to do everything, removing the cluster no problem as I was just in there yesterday swapping the speedo cable. My question is should my truck not be pre-wired for the tach, how do I connect it? I know to run a wire from the neg wire fom the ignitor coil, but from there Im stuck. Does anyone know where on the cluster to solder the wire? Granted I could plug in the new cluster and find it does work without needing to wire it, im just trying to be prepared for if it dosent work.....also I have to give my truck gas when starting it cold, im assuming the cold start injector obviously, but is it generally the injector itself or a switch that goes out? Anyway to check and see what stopped working without throwing parts at it?

as far as the tach goes it should be wired up and ready to go just plug it in. granted i don't know a whole lot about 85s but the sr5 cluster was an option you could add to your truck so im assuming toyota made i easy for dealerships to install. i did the sr5 cluster swap on my 90 a week ago plugged it in and everything works great! except the oil pressure gauge shows nothing. haven't had time to figure that one out yet.

Nice. That sounds promising about not having to wire the tach...could be that someone burned out the gauge not unplugging the old sending unit...

It should just plug in and work. Unless its v6>i4, or i4>v6. Look here, different years, but should all be similar. Didn't plug it in without unplugging the oil pressure sender, did ya?

Ya there wasnt a 6cyl out in 84 or 85 so that shouldnt be an issue....thats a good thread, its what got me wondering if they all were actually plug and play with the tach.

I just swapped one into my 85 runner. Plugged right in and the tach worked. my donor was from an 85 pickup though.. All you need it the oil pressure switch for the gauge to replace the old sender. i just got mine for 40 bucks at oreilly's

Yep, If you use the dummy light sender with the actual gauge... You will fry in it a heart beat! I can't remember if its the sender that you fried or the actual gauge. You need the dome shaped one.

Update..got the cluster in and the tach works just fine...Issue #1 seems the be the coolant gauge, it worked at first and then stopped working a mile or so out on my test drive. It came on briefly when I drove over a really bumpy patch then stopped working again. It worked fine with my old cluster no matter how rough the road. is this most likely just a faulty gauge? Possible bad connection on the back of the cluster? I also replaced the Oil pressure sending unit with a used part the guy sent me. Don't worry I changed it out before turning the motor on. But now plugged in the gauge barely moves past the low mark and doesn't move at all depending on what rpm I'm at. There is oil in the truck and the dummy light never came on with the old cluster, is this most likely a bad sending unit?

I would check all the wires between the temp sender and the gauge. More than likely, it a bad connection, or a bit of bare wire. Probably connection. My old temp gauge never read above 1/4, but the SR5 gauge responds faster, and is more expressive. Make sense? If it was a used oil sender, probably just worn out. And I've heard the SR5 oil gauges aren't crazy accurate, anyway.

I'll dig back in there tomorrow and check all the connections on the back of the cluster. I'd imagine if there was actual interference in the wire somewhere I would've had problems with the old cluster too right? oh well Its great having a tach finally. discovered I've never revved this truck past 4k lol
