W-56 wont go into 3rd gear

i was driving my truck home the other day and while climbing a hill i downshifted to 3rd gear. after i let the clutch out, it pulled for a second and then jerked back out of gear. i tried to put it back in 3rd but when i let the clutch out it grinds and jumps out. i have been driving like that for a week and skipping 3rd (2nd to 4th and vice versa). yesterday i repaced the shifter seat and socket with the marlin crawler hd parts and it didnt help any. im now sure im going to have to drop the tranny to fix this but it would help to know what the problem is. any ideas would be appreciated. Also, is it bad for the engine/ tranny to skip 3rd, because it will be awhile before i get the chance to fix it?

I had this exact symptom with my 4th gear. Drove like that with 1,2,3,5 for a month or so. In the beginning, I could finesse it into 4th gear, but within a week I could not use the gear at all.

I Drained the fluid and a bunch of metal pieces came out. To me it looked like a bearing cage came apart. Its now my spare transmission to come apart when all of the other projects on my rig are done.

FWIW...have you done a body lift recently?

How long till you have the $$? It could totally fail at any time.

ok, yesterday i was pulling out of a parking lot and went to shift in to 2nd gear and the shifter felt like something was blocking it. i pulled it up to the next turnoff and tried to get it in gear, and it would only go into a gear while sitting completely still. after messing with it for a while i finally got it to work, but i dont know when it might mess up again. i just put in the marlin crawler shifter seat and socket, but i dont think that is causing it. does anyone have any ideas? im thinking it may be some kind of linkage failure.

@dropzone- yes i do have the longer driveshaft for the 2wd tranny if i have to go that route. will i have to change anything else to go from 4wd to 2wd beside take off the front driveshaft? also, will the 4wd clutch work with the 2wd tranny because i just replaced the clutch about 6000 miles ago.
