Toyota dually mileage

Hi, I have a 89' toyota dually automatic 3.0 that was previously used by uhaul. The truck motor has been recently rebuilt. Does anyone know what the avg. mileage should be? I am getting about 10 mpg w/o anything in the box. I have heard others getting from 15-20 mpg. I just dont know if mine is getting the best mileage it can or if there is something I can do to get better gas mileage. Any help would be great!!

How fast do you drive ? My mini motorhome got an average of 14mpg never going much faster than 60mph. If you drive 70mph in yours, then I would say 10mpg is probably right on the money, just like towing a full size trailer of the same height. Slow down to 55mph and your fuel consumption should be much better. Make sure the air filter is new and the tire pressure is at least 45psi (see the instructions on the door jamb or drivers handbook).
