Maybe this question is just stupid, but I have found the courage to ask it in the saying of a wise man, "There are no stupid questions, just stupid people." Here goes.

Has anyone ever converted a non-sunroof truck into a sunroof truck? Is it possible to pry the sunroof out of a junkyard truck and cut a hole in mine and make it fit? Basically this is just another step in the turn-my-DLX-into-an-SR5 project...

I too want to do this, no A/C..more air = better :-)

I planned on using a pop-out aftermarket kit instead... comes with instructions and your sure to have all the parts needed... I probally wont tackle the job myself, dont have the propper tools...

id go with and aftermarket kit.

just make shure you measure like 15 times before you cut... had guy post up looking for help after he cut the hole like 2" to large.

Having an SR5 with the sunroof, I would have to guess that it would not be impossible (given time and $), but it would be pretty difficult. I would envision having to cut the entire surrounding area out of the donor sunroof, then assemble that onto your truck. Making sure that was water-tite would probably be a pain.

Another issue is that the factory sunroof has drains routed through the roof pillers, and I'm not sure how you would address that.

I think you would be better off, in the long run, to get yourself a quality aftermarket sunroof that won't have these problems.

edit: MY BAD! I thought you had a 3rd gen, but I think that the same concerns pertain to the 2nd gen, as well.

It wouldn't be possible without welding the new one in. On the factory one the roof is crimped inward to help seal it.

Look into canvas sunroofs. They have those car shows on the speed channel on weekend mornings, and I once saw them show how to install a canvas sunroof on a Chevy S-10 (or similar truck) that they were building up as a daily driver. They made it look pretty easy, and it takes about a day. They are pretty cool, and even make ones that are motorized. A quick search didn't turn up any great links, but if you have the right search engine I'm sure you could find something.

Good write-up for installing an aftermarket sunroof:

Got the sunfroof from CR Laurence with solar glass, based on the trusted and 40+ years experienced installers recommendation. After drilling a pilot hole inside the section to be removed, metal shears were used to cut out the opening as traced onto the roof with a carefully placed template. It looks way much better than I was expecting, looks like OEM/stock to anyone who doesn't know what the real one looks like, and makes my original SR5 transplant idea definitely NOT worth the massive work and "used" result. A transplant has enough complications and additional expenses that it doesn't compete with an aftermarket. While we had the headliner out I put in an SR5 map light assembly over the Rearview mirror and wired it to my extra fuse block so it works independent of the ignition, also put a small piece of red tail light lens repair tape on the drivers side plastic lens to conserve my night vision.

my dad got a sunroof put in his one Rav4 and this thing was HUGE!!! looked oem and never leaked...i think it ran him $800. i want to get the same one in my truck...

You can get aftermarket sunroofs at an autoglass place for a reasonable price. My mom got one in her 97 Rav4 when it was new and she's had no issues, and it's performed flawlessly. I would hesitate to get it done profesionally from an auto glass shop because if you have something wrong with it you just take it back and they fix it, provided they are reputable.
