Starter Troubles when cold

My Baby Needs You!
Hey guys, On my 86 yota 4x4 on exremely cold days, (20 and below) my starter will not throw itself out all the way. I got a brand new battery with 875 cca, so its not that. I was wondering why it won't throw out all the way. it makes a horrific grinding on the flywheel when it engages, and when you give the key a few quick jolts, it finally comes to, is it just greasy buildup that gets thick when cold, or is the starer fixin to die? NOTE, THE GEARS ARE FINE. this only happens on extremely cold days. flywheel is excellent!!

hmm sounds like what mine did... turns out that the teeth on the starter wore all worn down so it would just slip and not start ... you cant buy that part you have to buy a new starter

get in there, pull the starter and clean up the bendix. look at mechanism to see its working, put power directly to it and see if it operates properly after you have cleaned it up. that should solve your problem.
