speedometer works, odometer doesn't??

I thought they were both driven off the speedo cable arent they? So does this mean I have a bad odometer? How do I fix that? Suggestions?

Thanks

Andy

Yeah, they are both driven off the speedo cable. The cable enters the instrument cluster and then into the back of the speedo. The odometer is turned by gears which are spun by the very same cable. The gear are small and plastic and it isn't inconceivable to see on breaking, stripping or coming loose. Its pretty self explanatory taking apart the dash, pehaps you can find a used cluster at a wrecker and replace the plastic gears or just swap out the whole thing adjusting the mileage appropriately. Make sure to spray graphite lube down the cable to prevent it from making noise in the future.

On a side note, when my speedo was making annoying noises, my VW driving friend suggested I unplug (his is broken and he's cool with that). I said I wouldn't cause I wanted my truck to clock as many miles as possible as I'm kind of proud of it lasting as long as it has. He was pretty surprised as people high mileage is a deal breaker on VWs. He will soon be getting a Toyota.
