Random Rattling
#1
Hi guys,
I'm finally done with my SAS on my 90' V6 pickup, roughly 100 miles in only, driving the truck to work once a week to test it out. On my way home a couple weeks back I started having some random rattling. Hard to describe, other than pretty scary. Pulled over and saw nothing, started driving again and it did it a good 20-30 times on what ended up being a long 15 mile drive home.
Hard to tell but it felt like it was coming from the front end. Also, one the rare occasion the noise wouldn't immediately go away (it typically does go away as fast as it came in) I could tell that it is a drive line noise, as in, as I slew down through braking the pitch of that noise would also decrease as if something was rubbing again wheel (or anything else tied to wheel speed).
I checked everything and decided to pull the front wheel bearings, and other than for the wheel bearing thrust washers (reused from the donor front axle which I had not replaced) everything looked good. I replaced bearings and put new bearing nut, thrust washers and, followed the preload instructions to the letter. Everything was fine for a good 30 miles, and yesterday on my way back home from work, same thing happened. Well once, then nothing for 10 miles, and then multiple times on the last 3-4 miles, on-off, no extended rattling till I stop like the first time.
Anyway, today a little bit at a loss I went on youtube watching more rattling sound cars/trucks videos that I thought would exist. And I found this one:
(first 20 seconds or so).
That's as close to what I am hearing. Although since it's not as frequent as the guy in the video, I can't reproduce the with the wheels jacked up.
Tonight I checked my brakes for loose caliper or damage anti-rattle springs and everything looked right. I'll spend more time on this ASAP but I was wondering if anything ever had a rattling similar to the one in the video? And if so, was it related to loose brake pads?
cheers and stay safe
