Mystery Shifting Problem

Well, my '87 22R automatic transmission has suddenly stopped "automatically" shifting. I can put it in L and it drives normally and will shift normally into 2. Then it gathers speed until it's time for it to "automatically" shift into D, but it doesn't shift; it will keep revving higher and higher. But, I have learned that I can make it shift when it should by slightly lifting the accelerator. Only a momentary slight lifting is needed and it goes right in. And guess what, it's the same situation shifting from D into OD; a momentary slight lifting and it goes into OD. Of course the first thing I checked was the fluid level and it was fine. So, I'm looking for clues as to where and what I should try looking at for a fix. Thanks.

Is your transmission electronic or non-electronic? If it's the non-electronic one it may just need the cable adjusted? Is it column shifted? Find a repair manual if you can. IDK where you are located but I have an A43D non electronic transmission from an 86 2WD Xtra cab in Tucson. I have everything associated with it except the carburetor itself, including the steering column if you need any of it.

Off the top of my head, check linkage and or cable adjustment. I'm sure any bushings are worn out after all these years. Spools in the valve body could be sticking. Is the fluid burnt at all? If it's still looks and smells ok and no metal present, maybe an adjustment will get you by.

Good luck with it. Please follow up with what you find. It may help others in the future.
Scott in AZ.

Thank you for your response. I'm not sure if my transmission is an A43D or A40D, but I can say that it has a 14 bolt pan. I've now looked up the cable adjusting procedure in the Haynes manual and will get under the truck when the weather gets a little better.

I just went back through some pics and the one I have according to the metal tag in the engine bay (on the cowl) is the A43D. It is on the bottom line below the Model code. The last group of numbers is the transmission that would have come from the factory in your truck.

My trans pan has 14 bolts. IDK what the A40D has. I have pics of my transmission if you want to compare them to what your truck has.
