Motor knocking, barely idles, wont accept gas. Toast?

My truck has done this randomly lately, usually after a car wash, or a puddle. I'll be driving for a bit fine, then all of a sudden it'll start cutting out, then soon after bog out and die, then impossible to start. The other day it did it, and i had to get towed him, and now it runs like garbage, motor knocking, motor has always leaked oil, but it may have leaked too much. I'll go to start it up now,and when i hit the gas pedal, it'll instantly die. Fuel pump, filter, and carb(carb was bought used but functioning) not more than 1month ago. Fuel lines replaced. Is my 450,000 mile 22r toast?

Cuts out after a wash or puddle... could be your distributor is getting moisture inside causing driveability issues. Pull the cap and check it out, may be able to keep the truck on the road for a few more miles...

While your at it check your whole ignition system. Couldn't hurt.

Exactly what Sensei said, sounds like a distro problem, run through the ignition system, whens the last time you did a cap, rotor, plugs, wires? Maybe just give it a little tuning love...

It CAN if the moisture is not able to escape the distributor. My only discrepancy with this solution is, it will IMMEDIATELY run like a turd after a wash... you'd be lucky if it even started in the first place.

BUT, its an easy enough solution. Simulate the problem (wash your motor) and verify it still runs bad. Remove dizzy cap, wipe it out with a paper towel... maybe even blow dry it, and throw it back on. If it runs better, voila. If not, I'd check the ignition coil.

The ignition coil is one component that a lot of people overlook and, when failing, it reacts inconsistently and can only be inspected with a multimeter and not with guesstimation.

hmm, i will have to look into that. And for the 2nd part of your response, how many volts should I be reading from the ignition coil? Thanks!

Mmm... off hand I can't say for sure. Never had to myself... but if you look in my signature (the area below that lists my vehicles) there is a link to downlaodable, FREE factory service manuals. I would imagine it will list a testing procedure along with what kind of values you'll be looking for.

I went to start it after a good 5 days of sitting in the dry, and it'll turn on and idle, but the second I hit that gas pedal, it immediatly dies

i agree check distributor cap DONT BUY NEW take a blow dryer and dry the cab and distributor out passing a propane torch over the inside of the cap QUICKLY works as well, if it still dosnt work try changing your fuel filter its cheap or just take it off and blow through it into a clear container that's dry see if water in fuel that is a cheap free start to find problem

i just really think its a fuel problem, because it'll start idle for less than a min then die. If i start it up, and hit the gas, even a little love tap, instantly it'll die. i just replaced the fuel filter less then 2months ago??

And you don't think it could be faulty? It sounds like a mixed bag (ignition and fuel), the engine isn't getting fuel (press on the gas) and is misfiring (when moisture is present). I would check out that fuel pump even though it's new. Fuel filter shouldn't really be able to be faulty but if you've got a vacuum checker you could probably check that out too, also check for a kink in the actual fuel lines?

(thoughts of a noob)
