Picked up a hitch mounted carrier for my bike and wondering if the 22re and stock components will haul it all just fine ?
Bike + carrier = 400lbs
this is my hitch (toyota). I believe its a class3 but I'm not sure.
Off the top of my head...sounds to me like a bad idea. What's the max allowable tongue weight on your ride if towing? 400# is a lot of weight hung out that far aft of the rear axle.
Thats the thing, I dont know tongue weight and my shocks aren't heavy duty. But I do see pics online of 1st and 2nd gen with moto carriers so.. I 'll do some research for stiffer rear shocks that won't break the bank I guess
I wouldn't do it. Even if you beef up the shocks and springs, that much weight behind the rear axle on a short wheel-base vehicle will be very unstable at speed on the highway, and could lead to disaster if you had to make a quick evasive maneuver.
Back in my (much) younger (and not wiser) days, I had a 2wd Ford pickup which had inadequate traction for some of the steeper backcountry roads I wanted to travel. So, I loaded 4 125lb boxes of sand in the rear of the bed and bolted them down against the tailgate. The 500 pounds of sand solved the traction problem, but boy, was it squirrely on the highway. I think I made one trip with it that way, and then sold the truck and bought a 4wd.
I think you'd be a lot safer and happier with a light trailer on which to haul the bike.
