I think something bad is going on in my transmission, when I pull out on the highway it shifts 1,2 & 3 fine then when it goes to drop into OD it slams in and bogs the engine down for a second then it seems to shift a 5th time and is fine... I know it sounds crazy since its a 4 speed auto trans but something isn’t good with how hard its shifting into OD. Any ideas? My ECT trans has always had a mind of its own, when you pull out hard sometimes it seems to go 1st into 3rd then drop back into 2nd too!!! The fluid has about 30,000 miles on it, its semi synthetic AAMCO brand that could be changed I’m sure, but it’s still good and red. When I changed it the last time I did a full 16 quart flush with the cooler lines into a graduated 5 gallon jug. Could I have a trans mount broken or worn causing the thing to jump when it drops into OD or??? My rear diff and U joints are tight and smooth. Figures after I finally get the head gaskets and that mess all buttoned up now the trans is acting up!! ARRRGGHHH ~Matt

check for codes...also you have three solenoids, two solenoids for 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifting, the other is for lock up...check this site out, it's helped me...

You need to unplug the ECT unit and do a manual shift. It's at the front of the console under the radio. It's a separate computer for the tranny. L will be 1st, 2 will be D, and D will be OD. You will not have 2nd gear because the solenoids are turned off. If it still does it in this mode, you probably have a bad torque convertor. Mine messed up, it wouldn't hold lock up which only happens in 3rd and OD.

Ill have to give this a try this weekend. Would the T C be bad though if once in OD its fine, it just isnt smooth going in all the time! Ive towed my 4x8 trailer with my Gravely garden tractor down I-81 in OD with no issues... I really have no clue how a TC works though, Im off to Google to see what is going on in there!

Try adjusting the kickdown cable to the tranny. If you did recent engine work, the cable would have had to be taken off and put back on. I say this because my Automatic did the same into OD for a couple months, and for some reason I adjusted the cable and now it never has done it again.Try a few different spots(EX half turns) to get it right.
