Exclamation Front locker (Which one?)

Hey Im lookin into buyin a front locker for my 1986 toyota 22 r 5 speed all stock except 31" dick cepeks. I heard that the tru-tracs are the best because they dont mess up ur steering. Is this true? I have no clue. Also will it make the chirrpin sound like the rear does when goin around corners? Any advice will be takin into consideration thanks for ur help.

A tru trac is a LSD, hence no chirpin. Do you want a locker or a LSD? Ideally, you would want a LSD w/ a selectable locker. All comes down to $$$.

I say go for the Lockrite locker. Cheap, effective, and if you need to turn just shift out of 4wd.

EZ locker, Lock Right, Aussie Locker are basically clones of each other, most say there are each a little different performance-wise, but on the whole pretty similar. This group is called "lunchbox lockers".

I did a write up on the Aussie locker, but I'm not sure how useful it will be to you as mine was in the rear. Click the link in my signature if you're interested.

With regards to your steering, it only going to be a big issue when you drive in 4wd on icy/muddy roads. Then the locker will cause the steering to act quirky. The faster you go, the more dangerous it gets.

Hmmm, I've heard everyone who's done this say it was probably the worst idea ever. That sounds like a major pain. Just work a street corner or something if you're too cheap to buy a lunchbox locker.

1 - What type of wheeling do you do on what type of terrain usually?

2 - I've never heard anyone complain about welding the front as long as they didn't run on rocks.

3 - If you're considering a lunchbox locker for the front (which you should be) the Aussies are regarded as the best if you can actually get one shipped to you due to their ridiculous supply issues, but most settle for a Lockright. I have heard nothing but bad about the EZ Lockers. They're junk.

Do you drive on snowy roads in 4WD?

Do other people (wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, whatever) drive your truck?

The reason I ask is because lunchbox lockers can be jerky and they will compromise steering in slick conditions. Likely, othe people driving your truck won't believe you until they put it in the ditch.

As mentioned above, Trutrac is great as long as both wheels have some traction. Lift a wheel (or on ice) and they are worthless. I HATE them offroad as they don't work when you really need them to.

I've got an aussie locker up front and love it. It is seemless in 2wd because the hubs are unlocked so it's not even spinning. I don't live in an area where I need to use 4wd on pavement so I can't comment on that.

It just plain rocks offroad, like driving a whole other truck.
