Engine swap question

My question is more tire related then engine related. I have heard that 33's are on the edge for what the 22re can handle. So what if you had more torque down low would I need to change gears. Also same ? for 35's. I know I will need lift of some kind with 35's. Any help will be appreciated.

you can still drive with ease if you only go to thirty threes, with no mods. and you CAN drive with thirty fives, but you will have to relearn how to drive as it will have alot less power. kinda like starting off in second gear. with thirty fives, depending on your stock gears, you can go with 5.29 gears, i have these with thirty sixes. and a tired 22re it seems to have plenty of power. hope i could help

I guess i'm saying if I change engines, to an engine that makes torque lower in the revs like a diesel, will it I have the same or better or worse performance with larger tires?

It's all about the gearing. Larger tires mostly take away from your top speed abilities however, i'm running 35's with stock 4.10 gears, welded rear, and a stock 22r i can spin the tires, drift, or do 75 on the freeway
Whoever told you 33 is too much doesnt know their stuff

Yeah. I'm on 40s with 5.29 gears and can easily out run my friend on 33s with stock 4.10 gears, off the line that is. Gears are the MOST important mod for 2wd driving. And the 22re is an awesome engine.

The gearing will keep you driving within your power band. You lose RPMs with the bigger tires and the gearing is supposed to restore the RPM to near stock. I have 32's with 4.88's and I can accelerate up a freeway incline in 5th gear. My gearing would be better suited for 33's but I don't have enough lift for that yet. For now I rev a little higher than stock but it picks up quickly. (For a Yota)

I've run 31s to 40s on a 22RE...it is all about the GEARING in your diffs. 22R/RE is one of the most reliable engines ever made.
