Does a used ECU need reprogramming for an OBD1 truck?
Hello All,
I keep hearing that I will have to reprogram a used ECU with my VIN if I do a swap even with the exact ECU part number.
1993 4WD M/T pickup
I am inclined not to believe this for OBD1 vehicles. A while ago, a friend of mine wanted to test a used ECU for his Hilux. We plugged it into truck and it started with no perceptible impact. Doesn't mean it will run efficiently.
So, folks, is there anyone out there who has swapped used ECUs without doing the so-called reprogramming for his/her OBD1 truck?
Thanks

The ECUs in these trucks are not that sophisticated. The vehicle's VIN is not stored, so there is no need to reprogram the ECU.
There isn't a way to reprogram them anyway. As long as the replacement ECU is good and is compatible, you are good to go!
