Differential Sensor?

Hey guys, pardon my ignorance but what is the job of the sensor on the top side of the differential? I have a '94 4Runner 2WD with the 3.0 if that helps. I've heard it called the speed sensor, but I know the speed sensor is actually on the tranny, so what's that thing?

It's for ABS. Your 4Runner has rear wheel anti-lock brakes.
