I am new here, but, I think I will around more often. I am having clutch pedal issues. I have searched and could not find same symptoms exactly. Thing is often when driving in town when I shift the pedal will only come back a 3rd of the way makes it hard to shift. And if I sit at light for too long will do the same thing. When I am shifting moving I have gotten into habit of pulling up with foot. Checked under dash no problems and cant see anything leaking around master cylinder under hood. The fluid level does not drop. Slave cylinder has fluid on it, but I thought if it was leaking then my level would go down. Tried bleeding with two person method and first squirt had air, then three more times all fluid and i stopped. Should I have kept going longer to make sure? Any ideas bout all this?

 

there is a little push pull spring at the top of the pedal bracket that pulls the pedal back up yours might be cheesed. its a little coil looking spring with a white plastic piece in the pedal bracket

 

it could be that is the bracket that is holding the clutch pedal lever is cracked. this bracket is very thin for a high stress/use part of the truck. poor design by toyota. if you search is site, many of the clutch pedal issue that isnt related to master/slave cynlinder malfuction is b/c of he clutch bracket.

the clutch return spring. I just went through this same problem. it got annoying fast

 

double check the support bracket on the firewall , but also have a look at the clutch fork .. these are also known to "crack " ..

Okay I checked the bracket and the spring and could see nothing wrong. I will do it again with someone pushing clutch to get full pressure. I was wondering though about when I bled the system two person method. First squirt had air, then next two did not so I quit. Should I have kept going to get all of the line. Could be my imagination but pedal felt firmer when I did that.

 

dude its the spring I had the exact same problem.. its just worn out

 

do this. when you clutch in on the release out try sliding your foot off the side of the pedal on the way up to give it a bit of bounce. it should pop the clutch pedal all the way up

 

I have not had time to come back. The thing is supa that it does not do it every time. Like when pulling ahead and as it does I have the clutch all the way to the floor and it is slightly engaged and if you take foot off brake will pull go forward. It does not happen everytime I use the clutch. Sometimes it is fine when pull up to light and as I am waiting it will do it. If you dont pull clutch up it is a little hard to get out of gear. If I take off in 1st with it like that I pull pedal up and it is fine. The thing is you have to have room to keep going to pull it up. In a parking lot where it is confined and does in reverse then you dont have enough room to keep going to pull it up. Then if I cant get out of gear have shut truck off.

 

You could always try isolating the problem to whichever end of the clutch system. For example, you could disconnect the clutch line from the master cylinder and engage the pedal. If it still does it, you know the problem is somewhere in the pedal or master cylinder and not somewhere in the area of the slave or clutch assembly. If it doesn't happen, the problem would in the latter areas mentioned. I know....this means you have to bleed the system again, but that's really not a big deal like the brakes. Which, btw, what you've done to bleed it should be sufficient and not be the source of your problem.....ie, air the line. Even if there was air in the line, it would not cause difficulty with pedal return. You'd just have a mushy clutch.

If you isolate it to the pedal/cylinder assembly, possibly there's a problem in the cylinder you cannot see. In which case, you could either remove the cylinder and bench test it or you could disengage the push rod. This would isolate the pedal and cylinder from each other.

I realize your problem is intermittent, but if you were to follow any of these suggestions, try mimicking as best you can any of the circumstances that occur when you have the problem.....like holding the pedal down as you would at the stop light. Maybe this is a bit laborious of a way to troubleshoot, but you don't appear to be getting anywhere with visual inspection. It's what I'd do, anyway.

 

Thanks thook I will try this when I can. How do I bench test cylinder? I can remove master, but, how hard is slave to remove?

 

What does it mean to bench test?
