Blown Head Gasket or Something Else?

95 3VZE (242,000 miles)

Had to replace timing belt because it had worn smooth around crankshaft cogs(engine had a slight miss for last 2 years). Got everything put back together and got lots of white smoke (smelled sweet like anti-freeze) out of tail pipe and some from around driver's side head area. Coolant had to be added several times (1/2 gal at a time). Got engine timed OK after shorting data terminals. Engine seemed to run smooth in engine compartment but sounded like crap at exhaust. Engine slightly sputtered when revved and valves on driver's side knocked. After 30 min of this, shut engine off and white smoke continued out of exhaust for another 20 min. like there was a fire inside the muffler. Got under vehicle and could see coolant leaking from holes in bottom of muffler. Checked oil and oil still looks good, just like it did when I put it in. Oil pressure has stayed good and engine temp has stayed good. Blown head gasket (or worse) or something simpler. And where can I buy rebuilt heads?

Sounds like hg. I had an old Plymouth Horizon that I blew a hg on a trip, and the white smoke that would come out of the tailpipe, my god. People could not drive behind me for prob 200 m, heh heh. Smelled strongly of antifreeze, and was loosing LOTS of coolant. I had to stop every 20 minutes because it would overheat, and would dump prob 2-3 l of water in er. STill went like 200 km through a mountain pass like that, wow that poor car... NEWAYS make sure you don't run the truck any more. You can crack/warp your heads or block and then your $crewed. Drive to a shop at the most, keeping an eye on engine temp and coolant level. and definitely get heads resurfaced, and checked for cracks/warpage if you do work yourself. Good luck

It difinately got to be a HG blew, mine will leak coolant under the cross-over pipe because it have a hole, I often put anti-freeze every week until it get worst so I did a HG replacement and it fix the problem and much power after the fix. While you are in the process of replacing the HG I personally will replace the knock sensor and the KS wire as well and yeah adjust those valve...

Mine blew a head gasket a few months back and was doing the same thing, white smoke out the exhaust and smoke by cylinder #6 in the engine bay , also sputtering and what have you, I replaced the gasket on both sides with new head bolts and it runs strong and smooth now.

I see alot of sure thing answers for a head gasket, but what about rough idle and only intermittant white smoke w/not much smell? Mine is a 95 runner 3vze 179,000 miles no leaks or overheat. Im also not getting any codes.
