blown head gasket - how far should i go?

87 4runner 22re 140k

My head gasket recently blew and charged my cooling system. Needless to say, I've got plenty of sweet coolant/oil mix in my engine. I have the head off and was wondering if its worth pulling the whole block? There's not much of a ridge on the cylinders and the piston heads are fairly clean.

I'm going to drop the oil pan to replace the timing chain but would have to get an engine jack to get the block out. IS it worth it?

The real question is, is it worth it to you? Anything can be justified, but will you get a benefit out of it or not?

It's a lot of work, don't get me wrong. But if you take your time, do it right, there are lot's of miles left on that rig...

Well when mine popped, I just did the head...Limited on funds, but still had enough for a cam. Did all myself with a bit of help doing the valve lapping from a buddy...I only had coolant in #3 blowing out the exhaust didn't have the nice milk shake look. If I did I probably would have gotten into the lower end as well.

With that said: how long was it like this? How hot did she get? How far did you drive like this? This are my main concerns. If it was only a wee bit, you my be alright, but if it were me...I think I'd take her down. All depends on what your funds look like and how bad she is.

140k isn't a lot of miles on an 22RE, like the others have said how much is the truck worth to you? I don't plan on selling my truck so if I had to do it I would rebuild the whole thing, if you need the truck running then I would just do the gasket and value seals.

Just so you know I am on 276k without a rebuild I may only have 120psi and less compression but it still runs good so a new hg might get it another 100k +

Yeah i think its worth the effort for me.

I'm gonna try to pick up an engine hoist somewhere and just do it all right. Though I don't think that I'll need to have the cylinders bored or new pistons put in.

I'm not sure what all I'm going to need exactly.

I would leave it alone. That is nothing (mi) for a 22re. You will be speding money for no reason. Just get the head redone and call it a day.
