Best Catalytic Converter For 1993 V6 2Wd
#2
If you can afford a factory converter, that is what I would suggest. The aftermarket ones I have seen are no where near the quality of what came with them from the factory. I am sure you can get one somewhere else besides the dealer.
I am not sure how often you are to replace them but would think you should be able to get more then 90k miles out of one.

In theory they are a lifetime part. The issue is they are only a lifetime part if everything else is working right. Once something else goes bad and makes the truck run rich or lean, or when it comes in contact with certain chemicals it can get damaged and not work as well or stop doing its job.
That being said, if the truck is running right don't mess with it. Sounds like someone is trying to sell you something you don't need.

It was TNRabbit in this forum who has a Sticky titled "What everyone should know about their truck..." where I read that the converter should be changed around 90K. I have not trouble with it running rich or lean, but my gas mileage sucks. Also I don't know if a rusty gas tank which I drove many thousands of miles on without knowing it until finally it caused a mess with my filter, etc .....would that have had any effect on the converter? It is getting hard, if not impossible, to find OEM parts for my 1993. Toyota stopped making them I've been told.

I wouldn't worry about the cat. The o2 sensor is what is likely hurting your gas millage beyond the fact that your have a 3vz. Check rock auto for the o2 sensor they are much cheaper than the dealership and if you order the correct part will be the exact same as factory.
