So I have picked up a 89 4x4 pickup with the 22re that has been in a barn for the last 5 years or so. I towed it home and pulled the plugs and turned the motor over by hand. So far so good. Drained the oil, replaced the filter and oil. Cleaned and gapped the plugs. Cleaned out airbox and replaced filter. Pulled the coil wire and connected a battery. With plugs out and coil wire off I cranked until there was oil pressure. Then I put plugs back in, connected coil wire and put in 5 gallons of new gas. Cranks but doesn't start. Pulled a plug seems to be getting good spark. Outlet side of fuel filter has fuel. Previous owner said it ran fine and he is a friend so not leaning towards timing chain problems. Any ideas on what to look for? This is my first yota so a little new at it all.

Hit it with some starting fluid. If it tries to run on starting fluid, pull injectors 1 at a time and crank, make sure theyre spraying fuel. Might be frozen from sitting with bad gas for too long.

So if I have a questionable battery ground cable can it allow the motor to crank but still cause a problem at the injectors? I will see if the injectors are getting fuel next but was just wondering about the ground cable. Thanks for you help!

I suppose its conceiveable that the computer could have a bad ground, causing it to not function properly. If the ground cable at the battery was the issue, the starter probably wouldnt function.

Fuel pump.

I will see if I can get an injector out and check for fuel and go from there. If it's not getting fuel do I check pulse voltage? Reading as much as I can but not sure of the order of checking different components. I sure appreciate the help, thanks again

He's got fuel coming out of the filter, but true, it could be weak.

Op, before u do anything else, put a gauge on the rail and make sure your fuel pressure is where it should be.

I will look in the manual and find the test for the fuel rail pressure. I'm guessing I will need a pressure gauge of some sort so it maybe a day or two before I have any results. At least I have a direction now. I will post up results when finished testing. Thanks

Ok so as a shot in the dark I had a few minutes today and I disconnected and sprayed every electrical connection I could find with contact cleaner. Cranked it about 3 seconds and bam it took right off. Seems to start and run fine now. I'm guessing corrosion or bad connection? Cv joints,ball joints,brakes etc are next. All are dry rotted and rubber has split. Thanks for the ideas, I think I may have just gotten lucky.

my '89 sat for a decade before I got a hold of it, I would recommend replacing every vacuum lines too 1st chance you get

That's on the list as well. Spent a couple hours today getting the blower motor and housing out as well as the ac and housing next to it. All full of mouse nest and crud. Hope to get them all cleaned out and reinstalled this week. Plenty to do yet for sure!

Drain the tank. Clear the lines and replace fuel filter Old gas is poison. I bet it smells like old paint thinner.

P O might be leaving something out. They don't generally get parked for that long unless something crapped out. Check timing?
