91 4rnr manual xmission - clunk

Ok...so I have a '91 4Runner w/manual xmission and it has 430k. The xmission is original.

While in 4th gear on the freeway going up a long straight incline, I heard a loud clunk and momentary high reving. I was not gassing it. It sounded like the clunk my detroit locker makes sometimes during a turn.

I'm going to check the xmision oil level, but wondering if I should change it too. I'm using Redline MTL.

mine will do the same thing on occasion, hasn't done it in a while but usually when almost stopped and shifting into a gear it is a violent clunk that puts a lump in your throat for a second!

sounds like the tranny grenades or falls off but then it works just fine. Come to think of it, it hasn't done it since I drained and refilled it with fresh earl, also using Lucas oil treatmenet in there too.

Slightly off topic, you have 430,000 miles on the orig engine as well ?

Thanks

EludeR,

Almost....at 130K...toyota did the HG recall and replaced the short-block...at the time, there wasn't anything wrong...they just did it all under warranty...engine has 300k....I've had the top-end done 2x since then...burnt valve...and cracked head.

430k is pretty impressive. Mine has very low miles on it, sitting at 170k now. my '00 taco just passed the 4runner in mileage, both still run like champs.

hopefully the oil change clears the issue, I would use something like MT-90 from Amsoil and add some lucas oil in there also, about 25% roughly. Make sure that the FILL plug unscrews BEFORE you drain! I can't do my rear diff yet because the fill plug is welded shut looks like.
