The sensor hanging is the oxygen sensor. The tube coming out of the car is for inlet off a smog pump. all I can say is ur rig has some serious issues.....

where does the oxygen sensor plug into? i have had this truck since i was 16 i am now 29. the rust issues worry me more than anything else. it's gonna cost alot to fix it up right to keep it from completely rusting away. this was my first car. so you can see why i wanna try and keep it going.

There should be a bung welded to the exhaust pipe right before the cat that it bolts into. I don't see it in the pic. Looks like someone hack jobbed an exhaust system into ur rig. That is the wrong cat as well. There is no smog pump on an '88. U should have a check engine light on. Does ur check engine light work? Should be on when u turn the ignition switch to "on"

Oxygen sensor goes into the exhaust, before and after the cat converter. Should be a hole for it, if not someone replaced the exhaust and put one without a hole in there.

As for the rust: scrape the stuff off and see how deep it is. If its just surface or not to bad clean it all off and paint it with rust converting paint then topcoat it with regular paint.

yes my check engine light is on. i was told it is due to an oil leak.which it does have, but it comes on and goes off then comes on again some times. yeah, figures the guy wanted to just weld in the convertor. my dad took it to a local muffler shop and had it done. i have the receipt for it some where. this truck does not see the road except in hauling duties or 4wd needs. it used to be my daily driver and was for 7 yrs to college. the rust doesn't appear to be too deep i think i can wire brush it off and paint it. hopefully the little bit of rust won't weaken that part.
