86 Timing problem SUCKS
Here goes! A short history will probably help. I bought this truck a couple years ago. The title say's its an 86 but the Tag on the hood say's Canada 88. The motor started life as a 22R - TE (Turbo) then at some point it was converted to Propane. In 2016 the lower block was rebuilt and it was converted to a 22R Carburetor, Weber 32/36. For a long time it was very hard to start but if you finessed it you could get it to fire eventually. I wore out a new battery in less than a year. If you could get it warmed up it would run OK always had a little miss in it. Every time I checked timing it would be off, so I decided on a new Distributor thinking this was probably the issue. I replaced the stock Distributor with a Boursin and installed it. Re timed it 5 deg BTDC and it advances to about 12 deg BTDC with the vacuum line hooked up. It has both vacuum advance and the 22RE Timing check plug on the fender No idea if this is still functional but I jumped it anyway. I also plugged the vacuum line to the manifold. Connecting the vacuum line does advance it so I'm assuming the plug is no longer connected. OK so now it's pretty easy to start, holds it's timing and idles like a champ. As soon as you bring it off of idle and pickup the rpm's it starts pinging, sputtering and missing. So, I check the Timing still dead on. Checked all the plug wire connections and they are good? So what the heck can it be now?? I don't think it's the Carb as I never touched it and it was running OK with it before? Any fricken ideas would be greatly appreciated! .
