22re knock sensor code 52

Hi guys,

I recently did my head gasket on my 90 22re in my pickup. Previous to doing the head gasket i had no trouble codes and the truck ran good. After doing the head gasket i am now getting code 52 with my check engine light. The light does not come on initialy when the truck is started and only comes on after i have hit 2000ish rpm's (usually when shifting into second gear) and then it stays on until i shut the truck off.

I have checked my knock sensor and it is still plugged in. I dont think that its the actually sensor because it was fine before the head gasket went and immediately following it was bad. can they go bad from getting water/coolant in the oil ? i have checked the connection that the pigtail plugs directly into the sensor and the one that is about 6 inches up the wire were it has another connection.

I did break a wire that went to some sensor when i did the head gasket but i soldered it back together, i am pretty sure sure that it took but i am not sure what the sensor is. if you are looking at the knock sensor and the oil filter from the pass side wheel well the sensor is located up and to the left of both (not sure if its on the block or the head) and the wire was either green or grey, i cant remember at this point. I am not sure if this would have any effect on it, i have tried pushing the wire back into the connector recently and it didnt seem to move so i assume its got a good connection. Where else could i be going wrong for this trouble code ?

All of your help is appreciated,

Keith

have you checked the sensors with an ohm meter? have you tried clearing the code?

no, i haven't tried checking anything with a ohm meter yet, that was my next step, but its been so cold out lately i haven't had a good chance.

and i have tried clearing the code multiple times

That is the knock sensor as described. Between starter and oil filter and up some. You can not ohm out the sensor because its not a resistor. You need to investigate the broken wire you fixed to rule that out. If that is not it, you probably have your timing too high and the sensor is picking up spark knocking as it should. Do a timing check with the jumper on the service block to make sure it is to spec. I had this problem and I lost power because of the high timing making the knock sensor kick in and retard the timing. Coolant won't damage the sensor. The pizeo cell is insulated.

My $0.02

hmmmm i did set the timing to the factory spec... maybe i will try retarding it a little bit and see what happens. I did have it somewhat retarded and i had no power at all on the highway so i advanced it a little and the truck ran much better. I will see if i can retard it and see what happens.
