I have a 1987 Yota with 22RE and Auto Trans, can the computer for the motor and trans get wet, or do i have to put them in a water tight box?

I mounted both computers above the steering colum to keep them out of the water, but they might still get splashed on or dripped on when i wash the truck off.

I read a while ago here or another board where people would seal them with silicone to keep water out. From my water cooling computer days, I know that most silicone contains acetic acid that eats electronics so you would want to use aquarium silicone or some that doesnt have acetic acid.

 

I don't think the connectors are watertight.

 

The connectors aren't watertight.
Neither is the ECU case itself.
The best way to deal with it, if you're really going to get water in the cab, would be to relocate it to someplace like the glove box. Just cut the connector off and carefully splice (solder) some additional wire in. Cover with heat shrink..

Even if you make the box water tight, the wire connections at the connector are still exposed and they'll likely short if they're underwater.

 

Some one I know (not me, honest), was hunting in a rainstorm. Upon returning to the truck (85 22RE), he placed the shotgun across his seat to unload it. Well, it accidentaly unloaded through the end of the engine computer. Blast took off the back of the computer frame, but didn't damage the circuit board. He proceeded to drive it home. The blast also put a 1 1/2 inch hole through the floor. Water sprayed through the hole, and onto the comp, all the way home. Ran it for a month or so til we got another comp.

I took apart the computer, and the circuit board is coated with a clear thick coating (like epoxy?). It may be pretty water RESISTANT, but I wouldn't take it into a lake.

TOYOTA! Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking.

 

You could possibly get one of the pelican cases that are water tight to put it in, something to look into!
