Hey hows it going everyone. Really anal question but what way is the odd crush washer supposed to be?

Finished my head gasket/timing chain replacement and now I am just buttoning up some loose ends here.

Heres the pic I took before disassembly: (And yes the old washer in the pic is odd-shaped one - but the square part is not visible)


My intuition is telling me to bolt it together like so:








Any ideas? I have yet to tighten it down. Like I said, really anal but it is used for a reason. I just am not trusting it was together correctly before I disassembled it. Thanks in advance!
