hello everyone I have a 91 4runner v6 2wd and im having a problem with my sunroof not working. I can hear the motor turning but nothing happens. i took the motor out and i can see the gears turning but when i put it back in it sounds like its working but the glass wont move. i looked into the assembly and can see the cables everything is there. if i use a screwdriver i can manually open and close the sunroof. the switch only operates the motor as if you were to close the sunroof the switch doesnt work when pushing it to open the sunroof. any help with this problem would be great thanks.

 

Sounds like something is disconnected or broke in the linkage

You state you can move the window this was with the motor removed ??

Motors get old and tired but if your hearing it turn and nothing is moving something is most likely broke

 

I can move the sunroof with the motor installed turning it with a screwdriver

 

if the gear assembly is anything similar to the one in my 91 celica, there is a fiber/plastic gear that is stripped. it is in the "transmission" portion of the motor assembly.

i have tried sourcing the fiber gear with no luck. the alternative is to obtain a complete used SR motor assembly.

i checked all the gears took the motor apart everything is ok. the gears spin freely when the motor is not attached to sunroof. once i place the motor back into the assembly nothing happens. possibly a weak motor not strong enough to move the cables?
