1990 22re pickup drum brakes adjustment ?

Hello
I feel like I need to adjust the drum brakes on my 1990 22re pickup
how to adjust them without getting on my hands and knees and adjusting the star thing on the brakes? Can I back up and hit the brakes on these?
I got about 1inch of pedal travel from the top till the end of the brakes . Is that too much travel?

Backing up won't do it.

Toyota rear brakes of your vintage are kept in adjustment by the regular application of the emergency brake.

If you want the best results, there is no substitute for advancing the star wheel.

An inch free play isn't really too much.

My 92 is the same way. Just get them close adjusting the star wheel, and then use the e-brake to keep them in adjustment. Just make sure to drive it a few miles to make sure they are not too tight. If the drum is hot after a few miles, then you know they are too tight.
