1989 22re swap runs crappy

So let me start from the top, and let me say any help is appreciated

Put a 89 22re in my 88, swaped all the sensors and fuel rail over so I wouldn't have to cut the harness, re sealed all the injectors, upper intake manifold and did away with all vaccum lines except those to the fuel pressure regulator and capped all others off. Starts up, idles really rough and acts like its running lean, and hesitates really bad when you try to rev it up, but after 2500 rpms its a screamer. But if I pinch off the return line on the fuel pressure regulator it idles great and revs no problem. Any body have any ideas why? Btw I did a full tune up and resealed everything, don't leak a drop of nothin. Need a hand cause I'm beating my head against a wall

thanks much

Hey Emmett welcome to yotatech. Please tell us more about your rig and what you did on the sawp. Engine, transmission, ac, 4x4, sr5, etc.

Mine for example is. 1985 4runner SR5, 22re, 5 speed W56, 4wd, AC (belt disconnected), rebuilt motor (by me), big grounds all replaced, etc.

So from there i have a few questions for you. Tell us what you know about the donor motor, miles, rebuilds etc. Before you swapped the motor did you do any work on the donor motor, timing chain or cam? After you got the motor swapped did you put a timing light on it? If so what is you timing set at? If not this is the first place I would start. Many people, myself included, have stabbed the distributor correctly a 100 times and then during a motor swap got it off by a tooth.

Did you take pictures of the swap in progress? If so please post them. Can you take pictures of your engine currently and post them? The more you help us the less we are guessing and the more we are giving accurate advice.

Good luck and welcome.

You should measure fuel pressure and flow volume..
