Hello everyone,

This is for my son in law's truck so I may not have all the details but hopefully enough to gain some help.

His clutch went out on him a few weeks back. He thinks it is the pressure plate but the issue is, the clutch pedal has dropped right to the floor like it is not connected to anything.

Now I don't know much about this stuff but that sounds like some kind of linkage problem, like the rod to the master cylinder, or perhaps something to do with the slave cylinder?? Just seems funny that the pedal just drops to the floor. But maybe that is what happens when the pressure plate goes??

You can have him push the pedal while you're watching the slave cylinder, to see if it's pushing on the release fork. If it appears to be functioning correctly, then it's probably the pressure plate.

But, if the pedal's on the floor then...

Check the pedal itself to see if it's disconnected from the MC. It should be connected to a push rod that moves the MC piston just below the mounting bracket that holds the pedal assembly to the body. Also there's a return spring that lifts the pedal off the floor when you take your foot off of it. Maybe that's snapped. I'm guessing it's one of those things, or the pedal mounting bracket has broke free from the body down there. That's a fairly common occurance.

I've smoked a couple clutch discs on mine(88 PU). Niether time did the pedal act funny.

It rarely happens under normal driving conditions, but the pressure plate may indeed have failed. I'd check everything else first though.

hows the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder?

 

Clutch problem first thing always check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder.

Was there a need to add fluid in the last few weeks or months ???

I will drive over on Saturday and start looking at all the possible issues.

Don't know about the fluid in the MC, didn't even think of that. I will call today and have them check that first.

I'm hoping it is an easy fix for them as they currently don't have two pennies to rub together.
