Rear Main Oil Seal

I have an 84 4Runner that is about to be lifted and have duel cases installed, i was under it today checking a few things out and noticed a lot of oil dripping off the bottom of the bell housing, so im guessing its the rear main oil seal, i will know more once the transmission and fly wheel are removed. Can the rear main oil seal be replaced with the engine in the truck, and how hard is it to do ?.

It's easy. Just take it out with a seal puller and tap the new one in with a small hammer. If you have airtools life is easy. Flywheel bolts are hard to take out without air tools.

Seal remover can be had from any parts store for around $10. Put grease on the tip so that it doesn't scratch the crank. Tap with a small hammer to get it between the crank and the seal, then pry the seal out.

Very easy. I replaced mine with a screwdriver. You dont even need to take off the aluminum retaining ring.

If you need a cluth installed anytime soon you might as well go ahead and do that and machine the flywheel at the same time the tranny is dropped to replace the rear main seal (rms).

I bought a rebuilt short-block when I rebuild my 22RE. Put everything together (W56 tranny and dual cases). Bam, oil dripping from the bellhousing. I had to pull the dual cases for another problem and decided to pull the tranny to replace the rear main seal thinking it was ready bad. Put everything back together and still have that stupid oil leak.

I think the people that rebuilt the short-block must have turned the crankshaft to clean up that rear main mating surface and took too much off. Now I can't get a rear main seal to fit tightly. I hope yours seals better than mine with less than 2000 miles on it

.

Hi, new to this forum. I had my crank turned recently and think I have the same problem. So before I reinstall the engine, does any one have a suggestion as to a better fitting replacement rear main seal? I don't want to use a Speedi -Sleeve if I can avoid it. Thanks in advance. Paul
