Electrical Problem need help/advise.

Okay so my Alt usually runs at about just below the 18 mark on my gage, the problem is, it is running at about half or a little below. you might be thinking that is the normal range, but that is only part of the issue. the lights are dimmer, the stereo clicks on and off, and i it wouldn't start just go click, then decided to start. other things you need to know: it is realy cold below 0 right now and that was when i noticed the difference, i have a really, really bad oil leak that is spraying oil all over engine compartment, the alt/charge lite is not on, and i have sprayed the alt with electrical cleaner. Any help would be great! as my GF said ask the TOYOTA LORDS for help.

Well, just below the 18 mark is normal usually(toyota guages vary A LOT). when I tested it with a real volt meter, right below 18 was like 14 volts. So if its dropping down to half you prob barley chargin 12 volts which isnt kicking on the light or the light is malfunctioning. the only real way to tell is go buy a cheap volt meter and check the actual voltage. fix that oil leak. spraying oil everywhere and continuing to drive isnt a good thing

I had that problem in my 88' pick up. alt would test good but would not produce voltage. sounds like your Alt is out.

Check the voltage with a DMM, the stock gauge is not accurate.
The minimum voltage should be 13.8V (engine running) to charge a battery.
If the voltage is good, have the alt load tested, it may not be able to produce enough current under a load.

Had the Alt tested and it was fine even under load. battery had a bad cell so i had to splurge for a Optima red top. but still didn't fix the problem. found a loose wire that may be the culprit. but got to get rid of all that oil too.
