Hello Toyota Owners,
I am a German Tourist and bought a Toyota Pickup Based RV with the 22R Engine 2 Months ago.
We Had nothing but Problems!
Our Engine Quit in South Caroline and we Had it rebuild for 10k. We did everything to do it right but Something is Not working properly..
We have a new CSF 3 Row Radiator as Well as a new Aisin Fan Clutch, a water Pump, a Dual Row chain Kit, a Dual Stage Thermostat, new Radiator hoses, new head Gasket (complete Engine Rebuild, new Pistons, new Rockers, Pro torquer camshaft)
All parts should be from a reliable source (LC Engeneering)
Our Temp Gauge is Always in the upper range.
With a IR Temp Gauge i was Reading 220F today, measured at the Thermostat housing in Tucson (110 Outside Temp).
I was only cruising around 50mph
Nobody wants to Touch the Car because its so old and I am running Out of Ideas..
Can anyone give me a good advice? Next step will be running without the T-Stat and maybe add Something Like Wetter Water from Redline. I am Just lost Here with my Wife and 2 Years old
First I'd get a different way of measuring the engine temp to see if the gauge is giving you an accurate reading---like maybe borrow a digital hand held IR tool. Another idea since the engine was rebuilt: What kind of power does this have? I know it's heavy but does it feel sluggish? I was also thinking maybe a plugged exhaust or the timing is off
220 is definitely too hot.
I would get a reliable, manual temp gauge. I like autometer.
What about trying a cooler thermostat? I run a 180* in my 22r. The dual stage is a 190, I run that in my 22re.
If the engine is fine and this is being caused by the extra weight, a good radiator shop should be able to make a radiator to keep it cool.
Is it possible that you have built the engine to produce more power/heat and with the weight of the RV, the cooling system just isn't up to the task?
I have found measuring with an IR thermometer on the thermostat housing to be accurate. Is the fan shroud present?
Inspect the thermostat. I run a 195* and the gauge typically points to the leg of the “P” and doesn’t fluctuate, though we’re not at 110* like Tucson. Good luck!
Is this carbureted? Are you running the stock intake manifold? Have you swapped bumpers or added any storage that obstructs airflow through the grille?

220f is the generally accepted top edge limit for a water-cooled engine, but it's definitely not normal and the reading on your temp gauge looks downright scary.
everyone gave good feedback, and i'd also reiterate, is the fan shroud present and complete, with the missing piece that people leave off? maybe take some engine pics... this is what the lower piece is: https://209yota1.com/products/16712-...ine-1983-1995/
do not remove the thermostat, unless it's defective, you need it to slow down the water flow thru the radiator in order to pull the heat out of the water.
