Unhappy '85 22re acceleration issues

I have an '85 xcab p/u with a 22re. The truck is bone stock with absolutely no motification except for a K&N drop in filter.

For the past 2-3 weeks, the truck hesitates to accelerate between 2-3 k RPM. It it jerks and shakes as if the clutch was slipping. However, it accelerates fine after 3000 rpm and drives just fine afterwords. This problem is more prominent when you shift into 2nd and 3rd gear when taking off from a stop.

I thought it was the clutch slipping at first but would like to get everyone's opinion before i start replacing parts. According to my father, there was a slight tear on the hose that connects to the PCV valve. I've notice this tear for a long time and it's never given the truck any issues like this. Anyway, he taped up the tear, thinking that i may be the cause.

Anyone have any idea on where I should start first?

You can start with the basics, when was the last time the fuel filter was changed or a complete tune up done ?, also check for vacuum leaks, you also might check for any trouble codes and see if any come up.

might also try cleaning your MAF/throttle body. sometimes K&N filters are oiled too heavily and the intake gets gummed a bit - that's why i went back to good ol' paper filters. otherwise, go through the entire tune up as myyota suggests. a completely serviced 22re is generally a reliable performer, especially a stock one.

How many miles are on your truck?

Don't JUMP to this conclusion, but consider it if an engine tuneup doesn't significantly remedy your jerking problems.

If the motor has been sitting, or has an extreme amount of miles, a leaking/blown rear main seal can cause motor oil to gum up the clutch disc. Eventually it will slip all together.

To solve this you obviously need to replace that seal and the clutch disc (or you might get away with parts wash and a little scrubbing).

But consider all of the lesser PITA options first.

Check if you have dead spots on your tps. use an analog meter.

I know this is a bit late from the last post but I have had the same problem...Turned out the water temp sensor had gone south and was telling the ECU that I was running cold, so the ECU starts dumping fuel and retarding timing like it would do if you fired it up in the middle of a cold winter. The temp does not rise and the engine runs like this, sluggish, poor fuel milage, and feels like your hitting a rev limeter.

1) replace the water temp sender, then do a complete tune up because all the plugs will have been gumed up by then and it is probaly time any way to put some money into that ol' work horse...

This should cure your wows, and if not cancelled out alot of maybes
