I have a rebuilt 22re in my 85 4Runner that has a little bit of timing chain rattle when you first start up then it goes away. The oil pressure is not always consistant between the 1 and 2 line on the guage. The engine has about 8000 miles on it. Is this a oil pump issue or something else?

I would think that might be a good place to start. If your not getting the oil pressure you need, the timing chain tensioner may not be functioning properly. Just a thought.

 

Are you talking about the "diesel" sound when it starts? It should not have that unless the guides are broken. Oil pressure will drop when the engine warms up and at idle. Does it go up when the engine is revved up?

 

If you have low oil pressure there will be not as much tension on your chain which could cause a rattling, which will also cause ur guides and tensioner to wear quicker. you could have an oil flush, there may be something restricting the oil flow. If there was a new pump installed when it was rebuilt then it shouldnt be your pump.

 

on cold start the oil pressure goes up between the second and third line of the guage. When its warmed up the oil pressure drops to almost the low line on the guage at idle. It does move when the engine is reved up. my brother in laws truck idles and the pressure reads at the 1/4 mark on the guage first line above the low mark. Im taking it back to the shop today.

 

I had the same issue on my 85 runner. First I replaced the timing set with an Engnbldr steel backed set, still did it. Then I replaced the oil pump also from Engnbldr and it fixed it. The gage only reads slightly higher than before but the problem is gone. If you go for a new pump make sure you check the timing cover, because it is part of the oil pump. If it's worn you may need to replace the cover too. Good luck!
