1984 20r with tranny/

hi guys. i am a little confused. from all my research they stopped using the 20r in 1980. but i got given a 1984 truck with stock motor stock transmission and it is a 20r? am i just being stupid?

no someone probably swapped the original 22r and 5 sp out and put that in to sell it asa running truck

that was my first thought but the guy swears up and down so maybe when he bought it he was misinformed.
