So, I was looking into possibly getting a weber carb for my 80 Hilux 4x4 (20R) but after looking at the price of around $400+ bucks I have come between a rock and a hard place. I have a chance to get a 22R that is in perfect running condition for $400 bucks as well. This is the complete engine that I know for a fact runs great. It's in a 2 wheel drive 84 Toyota longbed.

I have been looking through the forums and searching for more info on what is involved in the motor swap from a 20R to a 22R and have come up short. Does anyone know what all will be needed for this swap?

I have also heard that using a 20R head on a 22R block is a common setup, anyone here actually done this or know where i can find more info on this?

If I am thinking right.. rare.. if I use a 20R head on the 22R block, then I can keep my stock header and not have to swap to.. if.. the 22R is different.

Any suggestions or feedback?

I know i can swap a 4.3 or 350 or 302.. etc.. im keeping it as much a daily driver and mild offroader as possible and trying to retain somewhat decent gas mileage. At the most, I may eventually put a towing cam in either engine and some after market exhaust/header system. Eventually and dual optima batteries, onboard air and welder...

On another note.. does anyone know where I can find OEM interior parts? Door panels.. clear dash cluster cover... etc. I have a set of Acura seats im going to put in it, and hopefully a center console with radio compartment. Then Im going to put my CB in the OEM radio slot.

 

you are in luck , and this is possably the best , inexpencive thing you could do , to this year of truck .

you are in the unique position of having a 20R engine already to start from .. what that means , is you dont have to do any modifications to the top end .. if you dont want to .. (water piping and electronics expecially)

84 22R will bolt up .. to EVERYTHING on your truck now , and give you just a little more in the "emphhh" department .. keeping the 20R head will raise compression 1.0 as it has a better "swirl chamber" (hemi style)

additonally , with just a new oil pump drive gear and some bolts , you can do a double chain .


I did this 20 years ago , and pulled 150HP out of my "hi-brid"
I had a webber 36/36 mechanical , offenhouser , cam , and downey header .. (this costs money)

 

Sounds very very cost effective. No need for a different bellhousing or anything? It will bolt up to my tranny as well? Wow

If you need it to go now (IIRC, that is the case), swap the 22R head/intake/carb onto your existing 20R motor. You will lose a little power for now, but you will have a runner.

While all this is taking place, use this opportunity to thorough inspect the 22R block (cylinders, pistons, rings, rod bearings, etc.), make sure everything is good and tight, do the same with your 20R head and intake, get everything running and tuned out of the truck, then when the planets align properly, swap in the 22R motor with the 20R head. Voilą! All your problems are solved in a timely and manageable manner.
