I want to be able to easily rip movies to CD. Ideally I want to be able to specify to fit to ONE cd, so it will compress accordingly.

The software I have will allow me to break the avi at 700 mb, but not to increase compression to make it fit 700 mb. So, I end up with a 698 mb file and a remainder of 80 mb or whatever.

Can anyone recommend software that will allow me to fit a movie onto ONE disc? Within reason obviously, I know that the longer the movie the more the quality will suffer, so I *can* span disks for really long movies.

You know, dvd burners are getting cheaper and cheaper these days...
As for backing up dvds, nothing I've used has ever beat dvdx copy.

I am well aquainted with DVD burners and have dual layer burners in a couple of machines as well as an assortment of software for that purpose.



However, that is not what I am looking to do. I am looking to burn to CD for this particular project.

you can look into DVD shrink. I know I use it to shrink dual layer DVD to fit onto a single layer DVD - never tried it on a CD. But it's freeware - so worth a shot...

DVD Shrink doesn't output to Divx or Xvid avi, so no go.

Nero is your pal and you can make video cd's with them. Use virtual dub (free) to compress them enough to fit onto a disc, then use nero to burn them.

Curiiously, what are you using to rip them to avi?

I will have a look at Nero, but it's got a lot of stuff I don't need. I have plenty of burning software I am happy with.

The format is not as important to me as the size. I need to get them on one CD each.

I have several programs for ripping DVD to AVI and other formats, ImTOO DVD Ripper Platinum 4 works well.

Ok then all you need to do is use virtual dub to compress it a little, not to hard really but it takes time, least the programis free.

What I am looking for is a quick solution. Drop in a DVD and have it spit out a CD sized file on the other end. It can drop an ISO, an AVI or whatever. I would prefer not to have to perform multiple operations to get to that point.

I know such a beast must exist, there are an aweful lot of movies in Divx and Xvid formats that fit on one CD available via BitTorrent... What I am trying to find out is how people are making those.

you can adjust settings to result in roughly any size you want, or you can tell it to keep it under 700mb or whatever a cd is, i just compress them all to around 550-900 mb depending on length of movie, and burn several to a dvd at a time.

step one: put in cd
step two: start program
step three: press go
step four: close program and take out dvd

it rips using a divx codec you must install on your computer or a few other ways too, and saves in avi... or whatever else you want

it takes about as long as the movie is to rip completely

has default choice to remove menus, bonuses, and all other stuff except for the main title

no prob, and it had a few free trials, so its worth a try, caution, don't try to do anything on the computer while its running, I usually leave mine overnight or while I'm at work. It has a feature to shut off computer after done, though I've never tried. And it has free updates (I've had it for two - two.5 years so far) so it's always got the newest anti-anti ripping, and anti-anti-anti-anti-ripping 'technology.'

I use a program called ImToo Dvd -> Divx Converter, it can output most formats and you can select options as split the file past 800mb or force it to convert the file to a max size. Simple as well, dvd in, select the dvd, find the right data file and rip.

It also can also cut out the 5.1 sound, which takes up more space and just go stereo.

I would have to second Magic DVD Ripper. This program is awesome and gets pretty decent divx files as well as Ipod files. This program was definitely worth the dollars for me. Easy as pie to use...

Interesting. That is IDENTICAL to the ImTOO DVD Ripper Platinum I already have, except for the company name.

But, I see how to span multiple disks, not how to fit one DVD to one CD.
