Computer issues
There's been some strange goings on with the wife's laptop the past day and a half or so. Yesterday morning we were on the internet, set the laptop to standby while we went out for a while, and then yesterday afternoon, we couldn't connect. "Kept getting that Page Cannot Be Displayed" error.
I thought it may be something to do with the new wireless router, so we disconnected that and just went straight to the cable modem. Still no luck. After a bunch of modem resets and PC reboots, Sarah called Mediacom. They had us do some troubleshooting. We could see the IPs through ipconfig, but we couldn't successfully ping anything externally. We tried pinging www.cnn.com and that came back as "host unknown" and the pings timed out when we entered a mediacom IP addy. An hour in to this, the guy says it must be a PC issue.
This morning we called Dell. Same deal, a bunch of unsuccessful ping attempts. When we looked at the devices through the connection properties, they both cam back as working correctly. Finally the girl on the phone has Sarah do an IP release and IP renew (ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew).
That got things working. However, it seems like after we close IE and go back in later, it won't work, and we have to do the release/renew thing again before we can connect.
Anyone have any idea what's going on here, and how it can be fixed permanently?

Its probably the new wireless router. Make sure that it is configured correctly. When I got a new wireless router I had to keep messing with it because it kept trying to connect to the old LAN. I'm no IT guy, but I had the same experience.

Suggest you go to event viewer:
control panel > administrative tools > event viewer
Please report back on any applicaton and system error. This will help isolate the problem.
I am not convinced it's the router. Windows XP service pack 2 contains an irregular IP stack. Plus, SP2 attempts to plug the passive socket holes or applications. The plugging of the holes has caused alot of problems with enterprise and other applications.

Arrgh! Ya got me Cebby, I completely forgot about the computer section...
I'll check out the event viewer now. Yeah I'm not convinced its the router either, just because we had it disconnected early on yesterday but the problem still persisted.

The reason the DNS update request could not be completed was because of a system problem. You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. For specific error code information, see the record data displayed below.

Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller #2: The network link is down. Check to make sure the network cable is properly connected.
DHCP Error:
The IP address lease 192.168.1.100 for the Network Card with network address 000CF146ABBF has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).
That was the only error, however those warnings are repeated often.

Just a though is this a wireless adapter that your connecting to the router on ? If so I think in XP you can turn off the adapter to save battery life but this maybe causing the computer confusion by the connection dropping to the router and you have to be renew it before it starts to work. Check the adpater configuration or maybe power settings for network interface shutdown. I just recall reading somewere about that ealier this year. Worth a check anyhows.

I'll have to check that too. We've been on a wireless setup for almost a month now and we've not run in to this problem before. This morning Sarah tried to get online and not even the release/renew thing would work.

Disble the DNS network registration ...
control panel > network connections > wireless connection > properties > (high light) tcp/ip > properties > advanced > DNS > (remove the check mark) Regist this connection address in DNS
If the problem is persistant then manually enter TWO DNS servers int to the DNS fields.
Also, please verify you have the update firmware for your wireless router. Example,
my wireless router is a Linksys BEFW11S5 802.11b. There have been problems with DHCP (dynamic addressing) and multicast (multimedia broadcast) protocols. I updated my firmware yesterday to resolve this problems.
side note: I am former IT specialist from Intel Corp, with over 8 years experience in network, server and other foolish technology stuff. And from time to time have been know to make mistakes like ....

if you computer is having a problem pulling the DNS servers from your router, I owuld just manually set your DNS servers on your laptop to the ip address of the router (i.e. 192.168.1.1). This will hard set xps dns requests to the router. Tell me if that helps.
