Roof Rack
Thinking about using some of my tax return to pickup a roof rack/basket for my 4runner. Looking at these two at the moment:

I could go with a thule, yakima, sucro or a costco basket but I'm looking at something a little more low profile, if I decide to do this.
Reasons why: extra lights , carry gas/fuel can/s, place to put a shovel/axe besides keeping it in the cab.
Why not: gas mileage could possible go down.
Just seeing what oyu all think, not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Well I don't think you can go with a Costco (Coleman) rack anymore since they are all sold out. I was one of the last to get one but I think the pros outweigh the cons. I am really glad I put one on my truck and I had to drill holes through my fiberglass top to be able to put it on. I just did an install thread. Ck my threads if you wana see.

I used a Yakima MegaWarriow and could not stand the noise at highway speed and decreased mileage. I scaled down to a Yakima BasketCase behind a faring and improved both issues close to stock. With Quick Fist grips mounted to the cross bars I can carry just about anything.

How do you remove the front cross member? I was looking at it the other day and couldn't figure out how to remove it.
I picked up a basketcase and it will fit width wise on the factory rack with no problems but to mount it legth wise the front member needs to flip around for a little more room (so i think). Any help would be great.

Loosen the adjuster knob and slide the crossbar back a little. You'll see a single star bolt on the end cap. Remove that bolt and pop the endcap out. Then slide the crossbar forward and off the rail.

There is a guy up in Flagstaff that makes some sweet one piece welded baskets. They are on Ebay, I was SUPER CLOSE to buying one of his when I found the unbeatable deal of a lifetime on the Megawarrior I have. Check those ones out.

Thanks for replies guys the roof rack is on (just a cheap one for now). Took it out for a test today to see how it would hold up and it did very well. At 75 there was very little wind noise, even on the dirt it did fine. I did lose one of the mounting screws though somewhere on the trail (that's what extra's are for ).
The rack (shovel was still attached in this photo but I removed it later, bungies don't do so well)
